Dear Readers:
Tan Tao University Review (TTU Review) has been published three issues since it was launched, and due to some reasons, it has not been active for the past time. However, thanks to a drive for research in the TTU scientific community and great contributions from the faculty members, TTU Review has been recently rekindled, and the efforts bring a fruitful result of availability of TTU Review, Issue 4.
In this fourth issue published in early August 2018, instructors from all Schools submitted their articles to TTU Review. The TTU Review Board would like to appreciate all the instructors, particularly the instructors from School of Medicine for their great contributions. Notably, Prof. Thach Nguyen with his research group presented in the article, if the cavitation phenomenon is the mechanism for formation of plaques in coronary arteries, and the researchers suggested a new study protocol. Dr. Huyen Doan reviewed the most important aspects of the preoperative assessment and intraoperative procedure to identify complications of rhytidectomy or facelift surgery. Mr Ha Nguyen shared his experience in teaching English to medical students in Vietnam. Dr. Khanh Doan with a project funded by Vietnam National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED), presented a preliminary result of using Swiss Albino mouse strain for In Vivo pharmacological metabolic research. Prodigiously, Prof. Truong Le contributed many articles from his expertise to TTU Review.
Apart from Medical School’s contribution, this fourth issue also acknowledges great efforts of lecturers from other Schools, namely Dr. Truong Nguyen and Dr. Quang Ta from School of Biotechnology, Ms. Trang Nguyen and Ms. Anh Pham from School of Economics and Business Administration, Mr. Jonathan Lankford, Mr. Peter Huynh and Mr. Nhon Dang from School of Humanities & Languages. Besides, several other articles by other faculty members are in the pipeline, and will be made available for the subsequent issue.
Once again, TTU Review would like to thank you all the TTU faculty members for their fruitful scientific research activities by sharing their research studies and submitting the papers to TTU Review. The Review hopes to receive more of the support and contributions in the future.
Thank you so much!

In current literature, there is no confirmed mechanism for the formation and growth of atherosclerotic plaques. In reference to each individual person, the entire arterial tree is exposed to atherogenic effects of systemic risk factors and yet only a few arteries develop plaques. These plaques are observed in the coronary arteries in which they are clustered in the proximal segment of the left anterior descending artery (LAD), left circumflex (LCX), and the proximal and segments of the right coronary artery (RCA). Why is there such a pattern of spatial distribution? As seen in fluid dynamics and industrial hydraulics, the damage on the inside surface of pipes is proved to be caused by cavitation or collapse of air bubbles, a natural phenomenon that could also be similarly seen in a pattern of lightness and darkness. Could the cavitation or the ruptures of the bubbles be the mechanism of formation
Summary
Obesity prevalence has increased constantly and reached a global epidemic proportion over recent decades1. Obesity and accompanied metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance, diabetes and cardiovascular complications are considered as the greatest health problems in modern society contributing to the health care burden worldwide nowadays. Obesity is a complex, chronic disorder that occurs as a result of many factors including genetic, behavioral, environmental, physiological, social and cultural factors. However, the fundamental etiology could be attributed to an energy imbalance between food consumption, basal metabolism and energy expenditure which is more and more popular with the sedentary life in modern society2.
The animal models are extremely important tools for studying the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of obesity and metabolic complications as well as developing therapeutic approaches in management of obesity and metabolic disorders. In addition to obese mouse models caused by genetic mutations (e.g. ob/ob and db/db mice), the mouse model of diet-induced obesity is a polygenic model and has become one of the most important tools for understanding of obesity development and in pharmacological studies3. C57BL/6J mouse strain is considered as the most popular diet-induced obese mouse model as this mouse strain is sensitive to high fat diet and well mimics the human metabolic derangements observed in obesity development3. Unfortunately, the unavailability of inventoried diet-induced obese C57BL/6J mouse strain in Vietnam limits the local scientists in the biomedical community to do research on metabolic studies with high fat diet (HFD). We herein attempted to set up and validate a diet-induced obese mouse model of low cost and easy reproducibility using Swiss albino mouse strain which is commonly available in
Vietnam (obtained from Pasteur Institute at Ho Chi Minh city). Successfully establishing a diet-induced obese mouse model with Swiss albino mouse strain would enable further institutional pharmacological research studies in the future.
Medical English (Med Eng) allows medical students to better prepare for their future career as well as exchange their knowledge with the world. This article points out some methods that can be used to teach this subject for medical students in Vietnam, in which the author believes that an appropriate class and curriculum should be designed so as to increase the interactions of students in the class, thus improving their speaking skill. All the while, new technologies should be used to encourage them to self-study.
In this study, Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized by a simple and eco-friendly process: using extracts from roots of Arctium lappa Linn (Burdock) as a reducing agent for both two substances AgNO3 and HAuCl4. Modern analytical techniques including UV-Vis, TEM, FT-IR, XRD and EDX were used to analyze the properties of AgNPs and AuNPs. The synthesized AgNPs from the extracts showed the antimicrobial activity with the diameter of inhibition zone for Bacillus subtilis, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Trichoderma harzianum is 6.5mm; 6.5mm; 7.0mm; 7.0mm and 10.0mm, respectively. More interestingly, our results showed the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) to bacteria as well as fungi is significantly low compared to antibiotics ampicillin. In detail, it is 0.11; 0.22; 0.32; 1.08 and 2.16μg/μL for Bacillus subtilis, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Trichoderma harzianum, respectively. AuNPs did not show the antimicrobial activity on both five species used in this study. Our study revealed that Arctium lappa Lin root’s extracts could be further considered as a highly potential substance in the process to synthesize AgNPs or other nanoparticles with the strongly antimicrobial properties without causing the toxicity to the body.
Key words: Silver nanoparticles, Gold nanoparticles, Novel synthesis, Arctium lappa Linn, Antibacterial activity.
Chronic insomnia affects a significant proportion of young adults and elderly populations. Its effects are related not only social life but also the development of economy. Currently, scientists have revealed the sleep architecture and developed many strategies for treatment. Current pharmacological approaches focus primarily on Gamma Butyric Acid (GABA), the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. In addition, other receptors, such as serotonin, histamine, melatonin, are also considered. In this review, we focus on sleep disorder, the sleep architecture and current treatment methods for sleep disorder.

Business philosophies have a vision, a mission, and core values. In the same way, a personal philosophy has a vision of what contributions and improvements the world can benefit from. An individual can have one’s own mission that explains how he or she can become part of that vision. The guiding principles of the mission are called core values. As the diagram illustrates, the vision is the first concept to be developed and is the most general. After the vision is the mission, which is more specific to the individual. The core values are at the center of the mission and vision.
An individual who develops a personal philosophy in education research that defines a vision statement, mission statement, and core values, can periodically do self-evaluation to see if his or her work has been aligned to those statements and values.
